Its pretty simple with a rainbird system. Lay the wires with the water pipes, connect it all up, set your zones, and turn it on.
There is another system out there that is even simpler, but has a lot of moving parts. You can set zones near the house where it will reduce pressure to still hit the grass, but miss the house when it turns, and then once it clears its back to full pressure.

I had looked at irrigreen, but the reviews were not good. I like the concept, but there seem to be too many moving parts and computers to be reliable at this time.
I'm probably going to go with a rainbird system after watching some youtube videos.
The tricky part is I don't plan to lay sod over the entire yard, I'm going to sprig it with St. Augustine grass and let it spread, so I don't want to wash the dirt away. Still doing research on how to handle the rest of the ground thats not got grass on it while it spreads.

Go ahead and place the sprinklers where you want them eventually, then put the "Dead head" cap on the sprinklers you don't want active right away. Its a quick process and will keep those off until you put the sprinkler head back.
The only other way would be the use of valves and making new zones for the sprinklers you don't want to run right away. But would be way more complicated and expensive.
