GREENWOOD, SC – A man is critical condition at Self Regional Healthcare after an assault early Saturday morning left him unconscious.
According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was allegedly assaulted by Russell Dale Aiken, 33, of 3527 Highway 246 N in Hodges, while in the parking lot at Sports Break. The assault reportedly continued in the vehicle, the report states.
According to the report, Aiken and the victim were accompanied by their girlfriends in the vehicle. The report states that when they arrived at Aiken’s home, the victim was unconscious and cold to the touch and EMS was called. The report also states that another person administered CPR to keep the victim alive until EMS arrived. Officials say that the victim is currently on life support at Self Regional Healthcare.
Witnesses told police that Aiken and the victim, who were reportedly long-time friends, started arguing at Sports Break. One witness told police that the victim was in the back seat of Aiken’s girlfriend’s vehicle and Aiken got in the front passenger seat before turning around and striking the victim repeatedly in the head with a closed fist, according to the report. The witness said that Aiken continued striking the victim repeatedly in the head until after they had passed the intersection of Highway 25 N and Deadfall Road, though the victim lay unconscious in the back seat.
When police arrived at the home, they were told that Aiken had fled the scene. Police were unable to locate Aiken with tracking hounds, but later discovered him back inside the home. Aiken told police that he had just crawled in a back window before being discovered in the home.
Aiken is currently being held at the Greenwood County Detention Center and is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Officials say that those charges could escalate if the victim does not regain conscious. A source close to the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the victim has been pronounced brain dead and a decision on life support could be made sometime today.
