TJ Fender Flare Refurbishing

#1
So, the time has finally come to get the Barbie Jeep painted. The hood and fenders have been killed by the sun. I am going to have the front end painted in the next week or so and would like to get the flares looking good at the same time. Has anyone had any luck painting them and making them look stock? If so, what did you use and how did it hold up? I am thinking of just using some quality rattle can vinyl dye since they are plastic but figured i'd ask and see if anyone has had any luck....

I have used a number of different techniques, I got the best results from the Duplicolor Bed Armor in a can.

They key is to rough up the flares a bit and be sure that they are totally clean. All of the oily stuff that people put on the flares to make them black is only temporary, but also makes them harder to degrease and prep for paint. Krylon fusion was second choice, but doesnt hold up as long as the bed armor. Other spray on bedliner brands have not had good results for me.

10-4. I think we have talked about this before and you gave the same response now that I think back on it. Thanks for the info.

@VOLT what color was that you used to paint your winch? It's time to make that right too I think...

I went the bedliner route. The last coat is drying but they turned out pretty good. The flares had been painted before and they were going to be wayyyyy too much work to get down to the factory finish again. Plus I had a can of duplicolor on the shelf.

I used Martin Seynour from Napa cast something for the housing and cast aluminum on the drum. I literally threw the can out a couple days ago. That’s some great paint but I think it was really expensive.

I went the easy way. My wife’s TJ’s fenders were super dull, and my YJ’s fenders were trashed by the PO. I bought her new ones because she is picky like that and saved her old ones for the YJ and I’m going to bed line them after I finish my engine swap and install them.
