Men hold accused burglars at gunpoint until deputies arrive
LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -
It appears two Midlands men may have picked the wrong garage to burglarize Monday evening near Leesville.
Christopher Alan Morgan, 18, of Gilbert, and James William Whitten, II, 26, of Leesville, are in jail after two men held them at gunpoint following the burglary of a workshop outside a home on Sandpit Road.
Arrest warrants allege that between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Morgan and Whitten, who was armed with a knife and hammer, broke a glass panel on a door and unlawfully entered the building with the intent to steal an air compressor and drill bits, Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said.
Whitten is also accused of breaking a window in a rear door in an attempt to break into the home that is adjacent to the garage.
Arrest warrants further allege that a 69-year-old man who owns the home and another man found Morgan and Whitten near the property following the break-in, Metts said. The homeowner, who was home at the time of the incident, and the other man detained Morgan and Whitten at gunpoint until deputies arrived and later arrested Morgan and Whitten.
The homeowner also recovered the items that had been stolen from the workshop, Metts said.
Both were charged with second-degree burglary. They were being held at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.
Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Morgan or Whitten to contact the Lexington County Sheriff's Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff's Department web site (
