SPARTANBURG, S.C. —A man famous for calling out orders at an iconic Upstate restaurant is hospitalized in an intensive care unit and his family is asking for prayers.

J.C. Stoble's family sent out a release saying that the long-time voice of The Beacon Drive-In is in Spartanburg Regional Hospital.

According to one of the owners of The Beacon, J.C. has been in the hospital more than 10 days.

The release said J.C. worked his regular shift on Friday and Saturday, and was found unresponsive Sunday morning.

Stroble's family is asking for the public’s prayers for J.C.

The release said the Stroble family will gather on Friday and will make an announcement after the gathering.

J.C. was legally blind by the time from glaucoma he turned 40, but continued to work at The Beacon every day, starting when he was 15.

J.C. become a legend -- and he drew visits from many presidential candidates over the years -- most recently Ron Paul, John Edwards, Michelle Bachmann and Fred Thompson. Vice President Joe Biden also stopped by in 2007.

In August 2011, part of the Spartanburg street that intersects with John B. White Boulevard near The Beacon was renamed J.C. Stroble Boulevard.

At the street naming ceremony, J.C. remembered White, who hired him to work at The Beacon. He said, "I want to thank God for Mr. White. The remembrance of Mr. White was not just an employer, he was my best friend."
