LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Authorities say a woman was accidentally shot by her son-in-law while he was trying to shoot an armadillo.

The shooting happened on Sunday on Gosa Road.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies said 54-year-old Larry McElroy was outside when he fired his 9 mm pistol at the armadillo. The bullet killed the animal, but also ricocheted off of it, hit a fence, went through the back door of his mother-in-law's mobile home, through a recliner she was sitting in, and into her back.

edit:

According to a report, McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home at the time.

McElroy's mother-in-law, 74-year-old Carol Johnson was taken to the hospital, but was expected to be okay.

Who knows what was behind the armadillo to cause the richochet. i doubt it "richochet" off the animal itself, probably something behind it. How far from the trailer were they? had to be pretty close for a 9mm to go from here to there into the house, into the chair and into the woman. Possible. Heck you see how one shot with a .22 can kill a person, but getting shot 12 times with a larger weapon and you live. Life is short, anything can happen :)
