The most important thing is the reason you wear it! I prefer gold, but I'm old, and old fashioned. I wore out my first one in 10 years, but the replacement has lasted just shy of 24 years. (so far)
Like Larry's, mine has dulled over the decades, but the jeweler makes it look new in minutes. Considering the abuse that I have given it turning wrenches, it still looks good and CAN be cut off if necessary!
This is how I like to think of mine. Mine and my wife's were my parents first rings in 1977. It was very important to my mother for my wife to have it. Gold. Being im not allowed to wear it at work. (72,000volts) doesn't like metal of any sort. I leave it on my key chain until I'm doing things that don't require the skin of my finger being removed or the ring cut off.
