What is this King of The Hammers I keep hearing about?

#1
I know. It's in California. I'm in NC and this will be my 4th or 5th year going out. Fly into Ontario, CA with some buddies, rent an RV and have the best week of your life!!

King of The Hammers (KoH) is the coolest off road race in North America. It is held the first week in February in Johnson Valley, Ca. The Hammer Trails.

Where do I start?

Ultra4 racing is the sanctioning body. They have several classes of cars and prerunning, qualifying and racing goes on every day for a week. King of The Motos has a night stage starting on Saturday, February 4th going all the way through to the Unlimited Class cars on Friday, February 11th. There are 5 races during the week!

And on Saturday, Tony Pellegrino from GenRight Off Road leads the KoH Experience run. This is your chance to get your rig out on the race course and to get explanations of the previous days race from a top driver. It's a unique experience and always a good time. All are welcome to join us!

What's unique about KoH? It's described as the toughest one day off road race in the world. All other desert races go around the mountains. This race goes THROUGH the mountains! The course changes each year, but it's typically over 200 miles across the toughest terrain in North America. Usually the competitors will have to navigate up 9 of the "Hammer Trails" in the race. And to keep them on their toes, most years they run one or two backwards!! Look up some Youtube videos for trails like Backdoor, Chocolate Thunder, Jackhammer, Sledgehammer and others. It's insane! On top of running rock trails, these cars have long stretches of desert to cross where they will be doing 130mph plus! So everything from the hardest, most technical rock trails to flat out across dry lake beds at triple digit speeds!

2017 will be the 11th King of The Hammers arce. Typically for the 4400 class, less than 20% of the competitors finish the race! It can be brutal. Simply finishing is a real accomplishment.

If you have the chance, you should join 40,000 to 50,000 of your closest friends out at Hammertown this year! Our friends at Mountain Goat Media put together some good tips. It's not as hard or as expensive to get there as you might think! Get some wheelin buddies together, rent an RV and point it towards Hammertown!
