I feel that I have benefited greatly by finding this forum. I don't actually remember how I found it. But I have been wondering how people locate this site so I did a little research. I ran a query on the website's search engine ranking using the term "4x4 South Carolina" and found this:
Google: Position 85
Yahoo: Not found
Ask: Not found
MSN: Not found

And even worse. Using the term "Off Road SC" I got this:
Google: Position 17
Yahoo: Not found
Ask: Position 5
MSN: Not found

I guess I have two questions:
1. How did you find the site?
2. How can we improve the sites ranking on the search engines?

Doing so will bring more people into the SC wheeling world and also the more traffic, the more earning potential for the site administrator/club.

That's the question. I don't know. It used to be easy using meta tags and such. But now it's much more complicated and it changes all the time to where most (businesses) have to hire and SEO company to get their rankings up. But Even if we implement some tricks of the trade it should help. I just figured there may be someone here that can point us in the right direction.

My company uses and SEO firm ... maybe since I'm a client I can get some info from them.

And as far as getting ranked up higher it appears you have to pay to be at the top. The more you pay, the higher you go. I found that out with my lawn business website. I could type in my business name exactly and it still could barely find me.

I've been here since day one. I think most people would find this forum through searching tech topics through google. Heavily searched topics such as "hydro assist", "bead locks", "axle swaps", "rocker replacement", "bumpers", etc. will lead more traffic in. I've helped contribute to a few of them already.

The "pay to play" Search engine optimization is somewhat of a myth. You certainly can pay someone to do search engine optimization to get higher search engine rankings but it doesn't always guarantee it. Additionally, its certainly possible to get higher rankings just by doing some of the standard tasks associated with a website.

meta tags - ensuring you have good keywords in your meta tags - vbulletin has a section just to put in those good keywords - I have not fully read up and understand the "tagging" feature in vbulletin but I know its related to the standard meta tags configuration feature inside the admin area. If you have certain keywords you think people would be searching on certainly post them up here. I'll look inside admin right now and see what other keywords are already there.

inbound links - have other websites/signatures/ and incoming links from other sites always helps your rankings. Google or other search indexes crawl those other sites and see your link and give reference validity to it. You all can help with this.. if you have a website that you host, add a linkback and or put it in signature lines of other forums etc..

Google webmaster tools - make sure google can crawl your site via google webmaster tools - this was not setup previously. I had my other sites I admin already in there but for whatever reason, I had forgetten to add this one in there. It will take it a few days for Google to start "crawling" the site index all the postings and pages. This is where google really finds the content in sites by indexing your whole site to find the content and keywords. I'll keep you posted about the "crawling" process as it will probably take a while for that to build.

Seems like I read somwhere you can get Google ot point to something with a search. Something about putting in the search words and then find what you want on the list and then click it. The more that go to your sight with that term the higher you go on the google list. Or something like that.
