New Tellico??

Go to NC4x4.Com search Tellico. Should be the first thing that pops up.

Cliffnotes:
A Forrest service employee is willing to lease his land to the county to open an ORV park. Already having trouble though. However there are not streams on the property so it will be easier. His land touches two county's so they should get two tries from the way I am reading it.

Probably wishfull thinking but it would be sweet if it happened.

I dont think it is very easy to judge exactly how much the OHVers bring to an area and use it as a basis for a park. I know when I go on a trip I spend very little money if any in the town where the park is. A few examples:
Tellico: All my fuel was purchased before hand for my rig and the tow rig was probably not filled in murphy because it was expensive. Food was usually brought with me as well. There wasnt anything to do in town so I didnt spend any money there.
Milledgeville: A tank of fuel would get me there and almost home. Once again I probably brought all my food most of the time.
Harlan is the only place any money was really put into the town because it was so cheap there it was easier.

I dont know about others, but as for my self when I go wheeling it is hard on the budget because it is a very expensive hobby. When I got I do it on as small a budget as possible. Now with other hobbies, camping, going to the beach, etc I am more likely to spend money in the town because the initial activity isnt such a kick in teh wallet. I know murphy is a tourism town and there are many people who travel there with the sole purpose to shop and if they left it would have a much more direct impact on the local economy.
I dont mean to be a negative nancy but this is just the way it seems to me. I welcome other opinions on the topic. Its is also hard to tell in an area such as murphy how bad it was impacted because it happened at the same time as the downturn.

Also think of how many people who came to Tellico from farther distances. Our club in Florida would travel to Tellico and we would buy the food in town cause we didnt want to cooler everything from south florida up. It is nice to live closer but there were a truck load of people that did travel longer distances and did spend money. So to say there was no money spent, I cant agree with that. Was it billions of dollars. No way. But I do believe it was enoguh that people did hurt when Tellico was closed. and that is more than jsut the businesses that catered to the offroaders.

my truck wasnt really offroad ready til this past year so ive never been to tellico but i almost always end up gettin gas or food at el dorado outpost and eatin breakfast at the boondocks grill when i go to URE. so i would agree that maybe its not tons of money but it sure helps the surrounding areas

Yeah i got ya on that. but as far as an overall impact how many people who wheeled went to the shops, and the local stores, and resturants. Groceries were about it as far as what cashe was spent. It was definetly a noticably amount but it doesnt seem noticable enought to the communities. they must feel that general tourism brings in more money. that is why the land is being developed and sold. Its hard to lose a place you love to go to but even harder when that place doesnt want you there. They voted unanimously to deny the park in Graham county.

I know I always ended up in the Murphy Walmart, I almost always had to go to one of the local parts houses, and always went in town on at least one night to get some grub I did not have to cook or make. I always had to buy some gas at Crawfords bc it got low later in the week and I always had to at least fill up before heading out home on Sunday morning.

Jimbo, I think your seeing it differently from these guys on mostly an age thing... If you have a family your family is likely to go to town more than the mid 20's person as we are. IMO. I think it would deffinately benefit the town so maybe Cherokee where his land also touches wants some money.

I sure hope cherokee wants his money because i MISS tellico. Hell they take peoples soul with a casino whats a little 4wheeling going to hurt haha

We got gas in murphy on the way into the trails and on the way home, we would sometimes eat at the mcdonalds on the way in, and we would always stop at the royal waffle king on the way out:grin: plus i ended up in the walmart many a night on the way in as well, if i remember right that was one of the few walmarts that closed at 10pm

Yeah I was the same way, we would rent the full size "fernwood gully" or something similar as far as a cabin was concerned. Eat out in town every night, with McDonalds every morning for breakfast. We'd spend a healthy chunk of change between fuel, lodging and food. Yeah wheeling is expensive but I'm not cheaping out and sleeping in a dumpster and eating bologna sandwiches to afford it, I look at it as a vacation and that's why I would drive the 8 plus hours to go to Tellico, Harlan etc.
