8.8 regear

#1
Thanks to FEILOD, and his neighbor Christian, we knocked out a regear from 3.73 to 4.56 gears in just over 4 hours. It was an aesome learning experience, and went very well. Need a different cross pin for the carrier so I can reinstall the c clips, but it is ready for the truss and brackets....

The only obvious thing I can see is that it's Cast Aluminum. Not very strong. Can't take much of a beating.

Thats what I run on my D30 now. I a was looking at the other ones because I want a drain plug...I know its silly, but I hate having to pull the cover for a fluid change...

If your trying to pinch pennies and want strong, what about a BTF DIY 8.8 cover? It's stupid strong, pre-cut, just weld it up for under $60!

And realistically you could put a drain plug on any cover you buy. Just a drill, tap and pipe plug. Shouldn't take but a few minutes.

With that said, I am pretty sure the reason most covers you see for offroad applications don't have them is because they will get ripped up and ripped off.

Yeah...i didn't really think about that. The Solid Covers are nice. I have heard good things about them, and at $30 or so cheaper than the Riddler, I think its the winner. I don't like the Ruff Stuff cover at all. I'm sure its a good cover, but if you are 4linking and looking at any stretch, that cover looks like it would take up valuable real estate at full stuff with a stock fuel tank...

What ever you do don't buy ballistic fab covers. I had problems with the hole pattern on my 14 bolt cover and had to grind the crap out of my 60 cover in order for the tie rod to clear it.

Solid is a good choice too. Just noticed that the 8.8 covers are only $65 on the solid site, so Chase should be able to match or perhaps beat that price.

What are you guys doing for a parking brake with the 8.8? I see you can use the stock explorer cables (I have these) or ZJ cables...

I HAVE to have a parking brake. My driveway is super steep, and have ing a stick, I like putting the brake on to keep the weight off the tranny...

I used the stock cables and used cable clamps to tie into the original linkage at the tub, but I've never been satisfied with the the holding power of the e-brake. I'm not sure that the "travel" of the factory handbrake is enough for the 8.8's design.

I'm curious about what others have to say too..

Something alse to consider is using some TJ Dana 44/Rubicon cables, I'll gladly take pictures of mine for you but, I think they are the same as the 8.8...Cast loop that hooks over the lever sticking out the backing plate.

Link for picture of cable from Rock Auto.com, looks a possible winner, cheap too. Just watch if you order they have the drum/disc brake stuff intermingled.
