xj Brakes

#1
So I have a 98 xj and the brakes suck. The pedal is really soft, and it has been that way for a while now. I have swapped in a set of waggy 44s that are non abs, and my old set up was abs. I am debating whether or not to get a new or used brake booster or master cyl to see if that helps. If I do that can I just bleed the brakes or is there a special set up for this with abs. I have also wondered about removing the abs completely.

Some say to use a wj brake booster because they are dual not single diaphragm set up!
Some say to remove the wires by the tone ring!
Some say they have pulled the fuses and the pump still runs so they unplug the pump and some say that is unsafe!

So im trying to figure out what is the best way to go at it and solve the problem.

Thanks for the help!

When I swapped the axles on the 00 TJ I used to have with non abs axles I just pulled all of the abs fuses from the fuse box and the pdc. That took care of the stupid dash light and killed the juice to the abs module.

Are you running rear discs or drums? There is always a lot of debate over which booster/mc/prop valve to run with whatever flavor of brakes are on your axles. The biggest thing to remember is that your booster and mc need to be within the same specs, i.e. you don't need a big psi mc when you booster can't handle/make the pressure or vice versa.

Have you adjusted the rear drums at all? It maybe as simple as them being out of adjustment. Try that first before investing money, it could be the trick. With the rears out of adjustment it takes more fluid to get them to stop so the pedal will go down farther. How old is the fluid?
