My brother-in-law has a 94 xj that the blower motor quit working. He took it to a shop and the quoted him $300 to fix it and said wires under the dash were melted. I did a little browsing and see that this is fairly common. So what really causes the problem and what is the best fix? Where can I get the wiring if the plugs are melted?

I'm not sure how common it is, but my 97 had an inoperative blower motor. The fan was gummed up and would barely turn by hand.

I would replace the fan and use a wire from the A/C control unit to trigger a relay for the new fan.

Yep I'm all for using the OE wires to trigger a relay with 12ga wire to assure you it can handle the current. That should solve the problem.
I'm not sure on an XJ, but GM's burn out resistor plugs & pigtails.
